95% of all prospective clients I talk to, want to hire a personal trainer to help them lose weight. (Remember this statement)

Most clients believe that cardio vascular exercise is the way to lose weight. They believe that because like any other product, weight loss has become one of the biggest commercial money makers, in the history of money makers. Every day you are bombarded with advertisements about how easy and simple it is to lose weight.

If it is that easy and simple to lose weight, why haven’t you lost the weight? Answer……it’s not simple and it’s not easy. If it was… you would have done it.

Ok, How do I lose weight?

Wrong!! You don’t want to lose weight! You want to lose fat, and gain muscle.

Health and fitness can be viewed in three phases. If a fitness program geared to losing fat not just weight is to succeed it has to have three aspects. (1) Chemical (good nutrition) (2) Mental (It must be something you can get excited about, and stay with. No program will work without consistency. (3) Muscle building (strength training).

Muscle: Metabolically Active Tissue

Muscle is metabolically active tissue!!! In other words muscle is the physical location in your body where stored fat is burned. (Used as energy) More muscle requires more energy, so the more muscle you have, the more calories and fat you will burn over of 24 hour time period. Even while you sleep. Although the exact amount of calories burned for each pound is not known, but believed to be between 30 and 50, we can say for every pound of muscle you have you will burn 30 calories in 24 hours. That means just adding five pounds of lean tissue (muscle) would result in losing one pound of fat every month without any changes to your diet. A ten pound gain would effectively double the metabolic effect. That’s not a lot of muscle when you spread it over your entire body and it is a good workout goal. Humans are like cars, the bigger the engines the more fuel it will burn.

That is why strength training and proper nutrition is critical for fat loss.

Now, you understand why you need muscle to effectively burn fat, the question is, “How do I keep building muscle while losing weight?” The answer….proper nutrition balanced with Progressive Strength Training and a well thought out cardio vascular program. I use programs in the newer, advanced system of High Intensity Training, which will work for everyone.

Men use the word get cut meaning a leaner looking body. Woman often use the word tone up. Toning or enhancing or shaping certain areas of your body, what you are really talking about is muscle. Put simply muscle creates the shape of your body, and therefore more muscle equals more muscle tone. You can’t build a more perkier, rounder, or sexier anything without building muscle. So if you just want to lose weight, I’m probably not your type of fitness trainer.
